On September 2, 1748 (Kan-en 1), a Nokonoshima’s chartered ship transporting rice for Kuroda feudal domain (Fukuoka Prefecture) was shipwrecked off the coast of Ozushima, and ten crew members died.
Fishers in Fukugawa, on the opposite shore, had been holding memorial services for the ten crew members since then. It is said that fishers in Fukugawa, believed that holding memorial services brought about a large catch of fish.
Today, the Ju-nin-baka preservation group in Setohama holds a memorial service on the 7th of July every year.
The epitaphs of five of the ten gravestones have legible inscriptions. The rest are fieldstones.
