Japan's Special Natural Monument: Yashiro Cranes and Visiting Grounds〔八代のツルおよびその渡来地〕
Honshu's only wintering ground for Hooded crane
Yashiro district of Shunan City is the "birthplace of modern Japan's nature conservation system," where crane protection began in 1898, the first area in the country to do so.
It is the only migration site for cranes in Honshu, where mainly Hooded cranes migrate to spend the winter.
Hooded cranes arrive in late October every year and hibernate here in Yashiro before moving to their hometown of Siberia in early March of the following year.
